“Whatever my powers-feminine or the contrary-God had given them, and I felt resolute to be ashamed of no faculty of his bestowal.” Villette, 1853
An autobiographical novel based on Charlotte Brontë's own experiences while working as an English teacher in Brussels. Her second experience at working abroad was not a happy one, she missed her family in England and fell in love with a married professor. This novel, often referred to as Charlotte's lesser-known masterpiece, tells the story of a young English girl Lucy Snowe who, like Charlotte takes a position as a teacher at a girls boarding school in the fictional city of Villette. However for Lucy she does find eventual romance and professional success.
