'A Laodicean' is the story of Paula Power the heroine of the novel who having inherited Stancy Castle commissions the architect George Somerset to modernise the building. Somerset falls in love with Paula but has a modern forward looking attitude in contrast to Captain De Stancy a traditionalist who also vies for Paula's affections. Set against rapidly changing Victorian society the novel explores themes of tradition versus progress. The Laodicean in the novel is Paula she is the indifferent and hesitant one, Hardy drew upon himself for this character, he wrote the novel through an illness and was doubting his own religious beliefs.
