With encouragement from her father she accepts the hand of Edred Fitzpiers, the sophisticated but flawed doctor, despite having some misgivings about his behaviour. This disastrous marriage and subsequent desertion only serves to prove Grace's fears were correct. This novel explores the theme where opportunities for fulfilment and happiness in life are often forsaken or delayed.
