Jude the Obscure - Wordsworth Classics

“Remember that the best and greatest among mankind are those who do themselves no worldly good. Every successful man is more or less a selfish man. The devoted fail...” Jude the Obscure, 1895

Thomas Hardy's tragic story of poor stonemason Jude Fawley who aspires to study at 'Christminster' having self-taught himself Classical Greek and Latin. Any hopes are prevented when he dutifully marries Arabella Donn a local girl claiming to be pregnant after seducing the naive Jude. When this marriage fails he again tries to enter the university by supporting himself as a stonemason while studying alone at 'Christminster'. There he meets and falls in love with his cousin Sue Bridehead, she initially forsakes him, before entering into their own 'unconventional' and tragic marriage. In Jude Fawley Hardy created a character whose life becomes one of despair where the spiritual values of the past are lost over time. This was to be Thomas Hardy's last novel.
