The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde
“We have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language.” The Canterville Ghost, 1887
One of Oscar Wilde's earlier works, this short story concerns an American family taking residence at Canterville Castle despite warnings from Lord Canterville that the house is haunted. At first, none of the family believes in ghosts but shortly after they move in, none of them can deny the presence of Sir Simon de Canterville, who was entombed behind the walls of the castle for killing his wife many years before. While the story is mostly humorous, Wilde clearly conveys a message through the interaction of the ghost and the family of the significance of life and death and why love is stronger than both.
