De Profundis, The Ballad of Reading Gaol & Other Writings
“Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.” De Profundis, 1897
A collection of Oscar Wilde's works, two written in his later years as a result of his being imprisoned for gross indecency. 'De Profundis', which translates from Latin 'from the depths', is a letter written during his imprisonment in Reading Gaol, to his friend and lover Lord Alfred Douglas, which was published after his death. 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol' is a deeply moving and characteristically generous poem on the horrors of prison life, which was published anonymously in 1898. This collection also includes the essay 'The Soul of Man under Socialism', 'The Decay of Lying' and 'The Critic as Artist'.
