This time Jane herself, portrayed by Anne Hathaway, is the centre of this romantic storyline depicting the possible life and loves of Jane Austen, also starring James McAvoy as Tom. A suitable marriage to ensure financial security was expected and often imposed on young ladies in the Regency era but to marry for love, a theme Jane herself referenced in all her novels would personally be the more desirable option. Here we see her struggling with these feelings in a time where working to become a successful female author should not be the first priority for a young lady of small fortune.
