Little Dorrit - Wordsworth Classics
"A person who can't pay, gets another person who can't pay, to guarantee that he can pay.” Little Dorrit, 1857
'Little Dorrit' is the story of Amy Dorrit, a kind and selfless young woman born and raised in the Marshalsea Debtors’ Prison in London, due to her father, William Dorrit's imprisonment for debt. Her employer Mrs. Clennam's son Arthur returns home after years abroad and becomes curious about the Dorrit family’s misfortune and suspects that his own family may have had something to do with their suffering. When William Dorrit inherits a fortune he is released, which alters the family make-up - Amy remains humble and compassionate while her family's new circumstances brings pride and discontent rather than happiness.
The novel explores themes of poverty and wealth, pride and humility, love and moral integrity.
