The novel begins in the High Court of Chancery, where the case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce has gone on for generations and has “become so complicated that no man alive knows what it means.” Against the background of this legal case concerning the request by Ada Clare and Richard Carstone to reside with their distant cousin Mr. John Jarndyce, we meet the young Esther Summerson the niece of Mr. Jarndyce who arrives at Bleak house to begin her new life as a companion to Ada. As the lives of these three characters evolve Esther discovers her true past.
Charles Dickens used this mystery story to highlight the corruption of the legal system and its slow process in search of justice.
